Seven Drunken Nights, The Alexandra – Review

Ciarán Bourke, Luke Kelly, John Sheahan Barney McKenna, Ronnie Drew. Anyone who is aware of Irish folk music over the past 50+ years will know these names point to The Dubliners – who paved the way for the global appreciation of Irish folk artists the following decades. Created and directed by Dublin-born Ged Graham, Seven Drunken Nights: A History of The Dubliners features the cream of Ireland’s musicians –  Luc Power, Eoghan Burke, Shane Morgan, Aidan Keane, Peet Jackson, Conor Kenny, Dylan Graham, Aidan Burke – who come together to take the audience on a musical odyssey over the last half century or so.

Creator and director of Seven Drunken Nights, Ged Graham

Unlike jukebox musicals that feature a ‘greatest hits’ package for well-known artists with a fictitious ‘book’, Seven Drunken Nights for the most part runs in chronological order of the band’s successes and discography. And while each half of the show is bookended with the well-known hits, the curated songs used throughout are chosen with care – representative of the fortunes and ‘sound’ of The Dubliners at any given time. From what I observed, the audience knew all the songs anyway, so it could be argued that this is a show for true fans of The Dubliners, rather than those with a passing interest.

Anchoring the show from beginning to end as narrator/compère and musician, Graham mentions in the show the importance of Luke Kelly’s experiences, spending time with the Irish diaspora in England, in the years before the band began recording. The traditional songs that were fondly remembered by the ex-pats served as a reminder of Ireland’s musical heritage and mirrored the ‘Mandela effect’, when the Italian diaspora in America influenced and ‘improved upon’ the variety of ingredients that were used to make pizzas, compared to the ‘old country’. But I digress.

As well as the musical anecdotes that are peppered throughout the show, TV adverts from Irish (and British) TV, also feature between the songs. They certainly hit the ‘nostalgia vein’! As for the decor onstage, it’s fitted out like a local pub with optics and the works, which adds to the bonhomie of the evening. Judging by the audience’s requests for encores, a good time was had by all and a sign that the show will be popular with Dubliners fans everywhere.
